Vintage Soviet Cold War Civil Defense

An authentic vintage Soviet ShM-62U helmet-style gas mask facepiece, manufactured during the fourth quarter of 1985 and associated with the Soviet GP-5 civilian gas mask system.

Rather than treating this simply as a generic “Soviet gas mask,” Mrs. Bones documented the molded production markings preserved on this individual example. Those markings allow us to identify its size, year and quarter of production, and press-form number. Its factory code also leads to an interesting unresolved question in Soviet manufacturing history.

Documented markings include:

  • Ф-716 — press-form identification
  • С85•••• — Cyrillic С factory code, 1985, fourth-quarter production
  • Circled 2У — Size 2 ShM-62U facepiece

The Cyrillic У identifies this as the thinner ShM-62U variation of the Soviet helmet-style facepiece.

An Unresolved Factory Code

This specimen bears the Cyrillic factory code С. Current specialist references increasingly associate this code with the Saransk Rubber Products Plant, while older collector references identify Saratov.

Mrs. Bones has not located a definitive Soviet-era factory-code table that conclusively resolves the disagreement. For that reason, we preserve and document the code exactly as it appears rather than presenting an uncertain factory attribution as established fact.

Our current research considers Saransk the more probable attribution, while retaining the historical Saratov attribution in the research record.

Individual Specimen Condition

This example retains unidentified blue and reddish ink markings in addition to its molded production markings. Their original purpose has not been verified, and they have been deliberately retained rather than removed or cleaned away.

The lower valve/filter connection is exposed, and no filter canister is included. Age-related discoloration, surface marks, and other evidence of long-term storage are present.
