A luminous portrayal of faith, reconciliation, and the quiet beauty of the French Alps. Our Lady of La Salette is a limited-edition decorative collector plate featuring original artwork by Hector Garrido, issued by The Bradford Exchange in 1994 as the seventh issue in the Visions of Our Lady series.
Our Lady of La Salette — Hector Garrido
The Virgin Mary stands at the center of a softly painted mountain landscape, dressed in flowing pale robes with floral accents and a cross at her chest. A delicate golden ornamental border follows the plate's graceful oval outline. Garrido's muted landscape and the radiant light surrounding the figure give the artwork a peaceful, contemplative presence.
In person, the light-colored area around the Virgin Mary can appear especially luminous under direct lighting, creating an almost glowing effect in the artwork. This describes its visual appearance, not a glow-in-the-dark finish.
The History Behind the Image
The title refers to the reported Marian apparition of September 19, 1846, near the village of La Salette in the French Alps. According to Catholic tradition, two young shepherds, Mélanie Calvat and Maximin Giraud, described an encounter with the Virgin Mary. The devotion to Our Lady of La Salette is closely associated with prayer, reconciliation, and a call to renewed faith.
Garrido's interpretation places Mary amid the mountainous scenery associated with La Salette, translating this devotional subject into a richly detailed collectible artwork. The reverse bears a printed La Salette Invocation, connecting the piece directly to its religious theme.
